Something jolly exciting happened just the other day ... knitsofacto's follower numbers hit the fifties! And that clearly doesn't include all you lovelies following via Google reader and such! Plus page views for the last nine months topped 25,000* !! I think that calls for a celebration, don't you?
Actually, knitsofacto has been around since 2007, but for years it lay abandoned in a virtual attic gathering dust, until February, when on a whim I decided to give blogging another go. Blogtopia was much altered I found, and I wasn't sure if it still contained a knitsofacto shaped niche, heck I wasn't totally sure what shape knitsofacto was henceforth going to be. But I cleared out the old posts to make way for the new, restyled and revamped, and started afresh, follower-less and largely reader-less at first. And what a truly marvellous time I've had since, it's been a blast.
I'm not convinced I've cracked this blogging thing yet mind you. I mostly write as I speak - and yes I really do use words like jolly and discombobulated - but I can sound a bit school marmish from time to time, it's the academic in me, I can't always help myself. I'm not as funny yet as I know I can be. And I still feel very much a novice blogger. So I am humbled by your continued interest in what I do and make and write, and happy to have made so many lovely bloggy friends.
This giveaway is my thank you to everyone who has stopped by, I just wish I had a gift for each of you, a pretty primula in a little terracotta pot perhaps. Instead I have the perfect book to send to one lucky knitsofacto reader, Vic Brotherson's wonderful Vintage Flowers.

I was asked by a friend recently if there was anything I'd been surprised to find myself blogging about. And yes, there was: flowers! I adore them**, I always have, I just hadn't realised how tremendously important they are to me until they kept popping up here. I'm not often to be found in a florists but I always have flowers in the house. Cut from the garden, gathered from the fields and hedgerows hereabouts, forced indoors from bulbs, gifted to me by friends, or picked up for little more than pennies at local farmers markets. And I have a vast assortment of jugs, jars, bowls and bottles, old and new, that I use as vases. Which is just what Brotherson recommends: "try to keep as many different water holding vessels in your home ... as possible", she says, from "pickle jars" to "patterned milk jugs". I even have some old glass teething powder bottles!
I was hoping to have had a little booky photo shoot, to give you a taste of the contents of Vintage Flowers - blousy roses galore, hydrangea and hellebore, alchemilla and magnolia, cherry blossom, grape hyacinth - and tempt you to take part in the giveaway. But sadly the daylight here has been all but non-existent in the last few days, the skies so very grey and gloomy, and it's been quite impossible to squeeze a single decent picture out of the camera. No matter, if you scroll down here and click on 'View inside' you'll find plenty of enlargeable page views of Brotherson's book. Gorgeous isn't it, and packed with floral inspiration and useful how-tos, "tips, and old wive's tales". And see how Catherine Gratwicke's glorious photographs of the flowers are interspersed with images of vintage floral wallpapers and seed packets, and faded old paintings.
The usual pack drill then. Just leave me a comment if you'd like your name to be put in the hat, and it would be great if you'd also follow knitsofacto if you don't already, although that last bit's not essential. And for a second chance to win simply link to the giveaway on your own blog, if you have one, and then pop back and tell me that you have. Entries will close at midnight on Friday November 25th and I'll send the book anywhere in the world.

* I know stats can be deceptive, but hey, that's still a lot of page views!
** Except for lilies, I really do not like lilies.
The images top and bottom are of prints held by the Boston Public Library and do not appear in Vintage Flowers.
What a wonderful post to wake up to! Congratulations, A. !
ReplyDeleteYou deserve it. Warm regards across the Atlantic.
Joanne
Good morning Annie
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely post. I had to smile about this sentence: "I'm not as funny yet as I know I can be."
Have a nice day
Regula
Thank your for your comments on my blog.
Wow! I was happy when I hit 1000 views one month...you must be overjoyed! I like the words you use. It reminds me I'm not the only who likes words (not that you'd notice by reading my blog!)
ReplyDeleteone of the things I like about your blog is your very distinctive voice :) count me in for the giveaway!
I think being yourself and a bit different in tone is part of anybody's charm- blogging or otherwise. I still don't know what I'm doing on mine. Sometimes it's as simple as a purge when I'm too tired to talk. You seem to have it down pat so it's reassuring to know even the more experienced amongst us have some self doubts.
ReplyDeleteAnnie your blogging voice is confident and distinctive and I know you are going to go from strength to strength.
ReplyDeleteI saw that book on Ali's blog, Domesticali and immediately put it on my Amazon wishlist. I haven't clicked your follow button yet as I have all my favourite blogs on Google Reader. I expect you have many more readers who do it this way too.
Hello Annie:
ReplyDeleteHow very exciting to have had such success with Knitsofacto since taking it from the attic and dusting it down, so to speak. Whatever, it has emerged as a most interesting, varied and entertaining blog and we wish you every success in the months, and hopefully years, ahead.
Blasting trumpets and clashing cymbals! It's GIVEAWAY time on Knitsofacto. Your have created your own niche, Annie, and thanks to you we have depth, colour, intellect, warmth, and wit.... I could go on.
ReplyDeleteSo with a flourish of my hat I am entering your wonderful giveaway and as soon as I have dressed my shivering toddler and blocked my new shawl (not in that order) I shall return to say I have added you to my (newbie too) blog.
Hurrah!
ps Sorry, no time for checking possible spelling errors.... I have a shawl to BLOCK!
'Tis done, my friend! You are on my blog!!!
ReplyDeleteHello Annie! You totally deserve your success, as your blog is such a special and beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you have a few more followers than you think,as I too have your blog on my google reader. One of my daughters trained as a florist a few years ago and I discovered that what I thought of as a benign "green" industry was responsible for a scandalous amount of airmiles as flowers grown and harvested in this country were airfreighted to Holland for the flower auctions and then brought back to this country for sale. So I am entirely in tune with your practice of using homegrown and hedgerow grown flowers.
ReplyDeleteDear Annie, I'm not a follower as I follow you via my reading list; that doesn't mean I love you any less. My favourite flower containers are empty Bombay Gin bottles; their blue is beautiful and they look casually haphazard. Well done on your blogging progress, and I'm delighted you enjoy it so. The fun shines through for sure.
ReplyDeleteI for one am very glad you resurrected your blog, otherwise I would never have known you existed. I have been going since March 2010 and not many people have joined me on my journey, but no matter, the ones that have, including yourself, are such lovely people.
ReplyDeleteI would love to enter your giveaway dear Annie, thank you for the chance.
xx Sandi
I was delighted to find your blog. To me, it has a really strong sense of 'being' - nothing novice-like about it at all! It's funny to find out what interests you, isn't it, when looking back at your own posts. Whilst you know that knitting is important to you, I hadn't realised quite how much it was to me until I started blogging and following other blogs where the emphasis was on the woolly stuff!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be on the list for a chance to win the flower book - I will make the link in my next post and let you know.
All the best and well done on such good viewing statistics!
Axxx
I am very new to blogging and whilst browsing I found your blog. I must say, I am very happy I did and will be visiting often to catch up! I am now a follower and would love to join in your fab giveaway! Visit mine if you get a minute. Katie x
ReplyDeleteHi Annie x I love flowers too! And it just so happens that I brought myself a little bunch today to cheer myself up (lots of things going on behind the scenes has meant there's not been enough time to enjoy flowers or buy them!) and it's really done the trick! I always love to have some in the house but for the past couple of weeks this house has been flowerless which makes me sad. Today though, hurrah! We have roses :) deep joy.
ReplyDeleteI also can't stand lilies as they are poisonousness to cats.....I know this because my gorgeous cat Indie nearly died after eating some of one! Lilies should be banned!!
Hope you have a lovely weekend and I shall now shut up so I don't completely fill up your comment section!!!
Jo x
A milestone for sure!
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoy reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteYou are one of my favourite blogs and I enjoy a visit whenever you post....I already follow you! But I would love to be entered into the giveaway.......CONGRATS Annie.
ReplyDeleteKaren
I love popping in here Annie to hear what you have to say and I always learn something new too!
ReplyDeleteI love flowers as well and I always have fresh flowers in the house. To win that gorgoeus book would be wonderful so please pop my name in your hat, I already am a follower.
Happy weekend,
Vivienne x
Lovely giveaway, Annie! Please put my name in the draw. I will check if I'm a follower, and if not I will become one! Such lovely images today, very beautiful illustrations. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteHelen x
Just to say how much I enjoy your blog, no need to put me in the draw.
ReplyDeleteActually, I rather like the native Californian lilies that grow wild near me: they're called Naked Ladies because they flower before their leaves come up.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see this book. I hope the postage won't be too onerous if the winner (me, perhaps) lives outside the UK. Thanks for offering it to us.

Congratulations on reaching the giddy heights of 25,000 views and thank you for the chance to receive such a gorgeous looking book - would love to be entered into the draw.
ReplyDeleteI recently listed Knitsofacto in my top 5 favourite blogs for some "homework" I was doing (I wonder if you noticed a stream of visits from Blogging Your Way?).
Oh, that seductive "Stats" button! The first time I clicked it I nearly fell off my chair. Could those numbers really apply to my blog? (And why are all those people reading and not commenting?)
ReplyDeleteI love flowers too, but cutting them makes me feel a bit guilty. So you may leave me out of your generous giveaway. If those prints were available, I would definitely put my name in the hat... they're lovely. Good luck to all your faithful readers and entrants!
P.S. I tend to fall into a rather formal and pedantic style of writing (heaven knows why as I am not a teacher and never have been), and have to work at writing as I speak. I don't think you're school-marmish at all. Let us rather say scholarly, which is a fine thing to be when imparting information.
I love your blog Annie. I read via Bloglines so I don't show up in your stats probably. I actually have no idea what 'follow' means when I see that follow button.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful you dusted knitsofacto off and resurrected it. The blogosphere is a richer place with your thoughtful musings and lovely pictures in it. You're also a very dedicated and generous commenter too, so thank you!
I am glad you you post about flowers and gardens in addition to knitting.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the big numbers!
P.S.
Like Suse, I am subscribed via Bloglines, which is a bummer because often it takes 24 hours or more to show me your posts. I'll have to look around for a better aggregator.
Annie - very interested to read what you say about blogging. It seems that for some of us it's not just about the words, but the imagery too. I found when I started to blog that taking photos was as important to me as what I said. It takes a while to find both your eye and your voice - yours seem very mature to me.
ReplyDeleteI am not the flower arranger in this house. I may have the eye, but the execution is not quite good enough!
I check your blog every day for new posts, but I don't use any electronic "nudger" so I'm sure I'm not counted, so add me into the count!
ReplyDeleteAll my flowers and greens come from my yard, nothing from the florist looks as lovely. The book would be too wonderful.
-Liz
Well done you, very pleased to hear that you're going from strength to strength and that people are sensible enough to read your stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnnie I love your blog - am always happy when you pop up on my dashboard! Your voice always feels like that of a friend - no one wants a one dimensional friend! I already follow so include me in please!
ReplyDeleteHello, My lovely,
ReplyDeleteThe sketched flowers look like something I put on my wedding cakes! Gorgeous! I might treat myself to that book when I'm looking for inspiration!
And to you readers, yes, Annie really does speak like that and we love her for it!
In fact the only time I've ever heard Annie stray into more colourful anglo saxon language is when she is describing the antics of her youngest whippet, Griff.
To quote Brucie, Annie, keep blogging!

What a beautiful book. Count me in. So glad you got so many comments!
ReplyDeletehi, just found your blog and I like it!, just signed up to receive it by email.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win this book!
Although quite new to your blog, I must say I like it very much. I still haven't had the chance to go all the way back to the beginning, but I will soon. Congratulations on all the numbers going up...it is a little bit exciting to see, isn't it? I take a peek every now and then and sometimes wonder who they all are that come by...and it's nice to "know" some of them, like you! I'd love a chance at that delightful looking book. Flowers make me very happy and if I don't have any in the garden, I buy them!! I'll see if I can link your giveaway on my blog...wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteM
Hello Annie, what a lovely giveaway, please do count me in. I have added your link to my sidebar .. and very pretty it looks too!

well, I am so glad you started up blogging again! I think you do great! This book looks beautiful too, what painting inspiration! so lovely :D
ReplyDeleteI've just recently found your blog, Annie - congrats on your readership numbers! And please put my name in the hat for your drawing. What a gorgeous and generous gift!
ReplyDeleteA milestone for sure Annie, I enjoy jumping from Ravelry to your blog. knitting, flowers and books it is all great.
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiring blog and many congratulations on the stats, you deserve it. I hope you'll be joining in my challenge to pick a vase of cut flowers once a week for a year. All are welcome the 'rules' are simple. Only pick from the garden, the hedgerow or the allotment and be as creative as you like with the pot.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment on my blog... which has now led me to yours!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed having a wander around your corner of blogland. The book looks very inspiring, I always try to use flowers and leaves picked from my own garden - it's surprising how it makes you more creative. The vintage designs you've posted are inspiring too... and by a strange coincidence are so appropriate for my new series of pictures.

ReplyDeleteI'm fairly new to reading blogs and haven't figured out how all of this works- Google reader? etc. But I have your's bookmarked- sure makes it easier for return visits, especially when I can't quite get the name right!
ReplyDeleteI love the print at the very top of this posting, it reminds me of my great aunts wallpaper when i was small (in other words, quite a while ago).
By the way, while I don't blog myself, I think our writing voices change with our topics, events, etc. And I think you sound fun!
Upon my word...you have such a lovely, lovely blog! I am delighted to have found your wee corner of the world, and shall return soon and often.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a splendid day!
Warmly,
Judy

Beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeletePlease count me in on the giveaway.
Congratulations! :-)It is really interesting, how blogging can make us more alert to the things around us and the things we like!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad there's someone else around who doesn't like lilies ... Not that I want to gang up on them, but everybody always says they're so elegant, and I'm just "???". ;-)

I know what you mean though I think, sometimes blogging goes well for me, and at other times it becomes stop, start sort of thing. Wishing you well, flowers are a lovely subject, so cheering.
ReplyDeleteHello Annie,
ReplyDeleteI just happened to see this book yesterday, and was totally in love with it by the time I'd finished looking through it. It's absolutely sumptuous and delicious, and I would LOVE to win this giveaway. I'm not sure I stand much of a chance, but I'd be very happy to be the owner of this book. Thank you so much for such a generous giveaway, the very fortunate person who wins this book, is not just fortunate, but very lucky! Vanessa xxx

Just found your blog and would love to be entered into the draw.
ReplyDeleteVintage flower pics are lovely too.
Have added your blog to my list of must reads - keep up the good work.
I love this blog--so glad you resurrected it from the "attic"!!! I'm fairly new to the whole blogging world--so am continually delighted with all the new friends and ideas whorling around!! Just adore the "flowers from your garden" year round--I just "rescued" some late blooming melapodium and roses that I think were trying to complete their life cycle before the frost got them!!!
ReplyDeleteWell what a beautiful book! And such a lovely giveaway. I hope you are having a wonderful time at the knitting and stitching show and I'm not the least bit envious.
ReplyDelete:)
I love your Blog Annie! It's sophisticated and interesting and I am pleased to have found another mother of 4 who loves whippets, although I don't think we could fit 6 in the caravan so I'm thankful there is just the 1 at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI'm also really excited about your flower challenge and hope to participate as I travel around Australia for the next few months. Will be interesting! I'm going to try and link you in a post tomorrow but will confirm once it's done.
Have fun at your show!
